At the outer-most layer, it’s an attempt to understand what connects people to a given place. But it’s also a way to viscerally consider my own concept of belonging from within a somewhat nomadic existence in an expansive world. I began documenting my life in a moment of significant, unsteady transition, as I hid out with my family in Central New York for a few months. As a way to break from stale routines and shift my perspective, I initially used only the camera I first learned to take photos on, decades earlier in high school. I tend to dwell a lot on time. As neuroscientist Abhijit Naskar said, “Time is basically an illusion created by the mind to aid in our sense of temporal presence in the vast ocean of space.” Despite its remarkable ability to heal, it can also feel nearly criminal. Knowing its suspended moments can only retreat further into the recesses of one’s mind — and that we’re more or less powerless to stop this slipping — can break our hearts into more pieces than we can count. The more years I spend as a photographer, the more I realize my relationship with the still image is less about the medium itself and more of a compulsive fascination with memory. As a kid, my dream superpower was perfect memory, an ability to recall moments from the past as clearly as they felt in the present. I’ve come to understand that I document the world, in large part, as a way of visually hoarding those memories, both collective and my own. create with their natural environments and our notions of space and boundaries, The Gorges is a project that has allowed me to study those elements within the area I grew up. How we interact with the outdoors is informed by a myriad of factors, some of them geographically influenced and all of them socially constructed. Even within the contiguous U.S., our collective comfort with wilderness - our sense of vulnerability or security within it and our inclination toward or away from controlling it - varies immensely. In the mountain west, where I lived for a number of years, space is ample and humans are not necessarily at the top of the food chain. Access to public lands is common and widely utilized, almost impossibly-so to a transplant from the east coast, where we’ve populated and physically fragmented nearly every mile of land. The unique geography in and around Ithaca, New York experiences an exception to the rigidity of human-environment interaction that dictates so much of East Coast culture. It’s a playful haven, where hillsides roll gently above glacial gouges in the terrain that are the Finger Lakes. Steep, sloped granite walls and dozens of rivers drop dramatically into the flats, further carving out the gorges the area is famous for and leaving an abundance of waterfalls and swimming holes. But it’s people’s connection with that environment that inform this project. A physical intimacy exists that is uniquely tolerated by municipalities, and human exchanges with the geography are trusting, exploratory and daring. Nearly all of the roughly 150 living there were born and raised in Tibet, only to escape their occupied homeland in search of freedom from religious persecution. Many suffered imprisonment and torture under the Communist government of China, and traveled through the Himalayas on foot to reach Nepal, and eventually Dharamsala. For the women of Geden Choeling, as with many Tibetans, living in exile is bittersweet. It allows opportunities for education and spiritual practice that were forbidden in Tibet, and the freedom to do what they can for their people from "outside." Yet they will always be visitors in someone else's country. Conversations deservedly often center around those who identify as female. But we also know that patriarchal systems have a history of rewarding ego and pride in males while crushing any sense of emotional vulnerability and openness in love. When roaming the grounds of Dudley, I find myself meditating on the fact that every assailant and dictator began as a boy. Everyone who has watched careers crumble because of harmful actions to others was at one point young, innocent and curious. Boys become men, which means one of the most radical things we can do right now is simply raise better boys. On the ground, forty or fifty twenty-person handcrews were deployed, alongside hundreds of fire engines and bulldozers. In the battle against Rice Ridge alone, the Air Force, handcrews, loggers, dozers, parachutists, flacks, forecasters, and cooks amounted to some nine hundred people. Rice Ridge was what is known as a mega-fire, a recently coined term for blazes that cover more than 100,000 acres. The West has always known forest fires, of course, but for much of the past century, they rarely got any bigger than 10,000 acres. No more. In 1988, a 250,000-acre anomaly, Canyon Creek, burned for months, roaring across a forty-mile stretch of Montana’s Bob Marshall Wilderness in a single night.
